Radio interview with Dr. Leslie Banner about her book on the founding of the North Carolina School of the Arts, A passionate preference. She discusses with interviewer Marge Sosnik the development of the book; the early history of NCSA; gives a brief overview of the state of the arts in the U.S. in the early 1960s; and discusses the character of NCSA as a professional training school rather than simply an enrichment program in the performing arts. She also talks about author John Ehle and composer Vittorio Giannini, who were instrumental in the creation of the School; Giannini was chosen as the School's first president.

John Marsden Ehle Jr., author of novels and works of non-fiction, was born in Asheville, N.C., and has lived most of his adult life in Winston-Salem. He served as special assistant to North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, 1963-1964, and has been instrumental in establishing and furthering many significant educational, desegregation, and anti-poverty projects.
